Steps to apply for dowry harassment

1. The act committed comes under the Ambit of section 498A

2. Choose A Police Station

They can begin the approach from the nearest police station and can file the complaint against the person.

3. Procedure to file the complaint

First, they should make an oral complaint that the police will write and record the complaint and get the wife's signature. They should acknowledge a written complaint with that the police station.

At the time of giving a police complaint, the person should not give half-baked statement. The acknowledgment should be complete about the dowry harassment.

4. Register the FIR

Based on such acknowledgment, the police must file the FIR upon the suspect. The police should investigate the person about the harassment. Along with this police complaint, this should be taken forward under the domestic violence act to claim maintenance and protection from the husband or in-laws, or relatives.

5. Notice to the accused

After the FIR, the police will notify the accused person to record the accused statement to check or even arrest them.

6. Hearing in the court

The court is required to take cognizance of the dowry complaint, and within three days of the complaint filed in the court, they will have the hearing.

The complaint must include many incidents of physical abuse, economic abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse committed by the respondent on the accused person. The court will give the result after hearing by examining the shreds of evidence and investigate both the person and the family of the wife and the family of the in-laws.

Finally, after the hearings, the court will decide and release its decision with the punishment. The punishment may be either with imprisonment or a fine or sometimes both.
